IYA – International Year of Astronomy

The International Year of Astronomy was a celebration of 400 years of the telescope first used by Galileo in 1609. In recognition of this, there were astronomy activities for the public all over the world. Canada and particulary the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada was involved. The Halifax Centre coordinated the activities in Nova Scotia and promoted a wealth of astronomical events.
