I will examine:<br \/>\ni) \u00a0approaches to accurate graphic representation of what is seen at<br \/>\nthe eyepiece in different periods (including technique and intended<br \/>\nuse), from before to after the invention of photography;<br \/>\nii) \u00a0how we look at what were once thought to be accurate<br \/>\nrepresentations of astronomical phenomena;<br \/>\niii) \u00a0extrinsic factors which can colour perceptions, and account for<br \/>\nsome of the disjunctions we experience when comparing &#8220;accurate&#8221;<br \/>\nrepresentations from various epochs;<br \/>\niv) \u00a0and concluding with possible lessons about how we observe now.<br \/>\nBesides its intrinsic interest, it would allow me to refer to some of<br \/>\nRoy&#8217;s previous work!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our speaker:<\/strong><br \/>\nR.A. Rosenfeld, from Toronto, is the Archivist of the Royal<br \/>\nAstronomical Society of Canada, a position he has held since its<br \/>\ncreation in 2008. He was trained at the University of Toronto and the<br \/>\nPontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies as a palaeographer and<br \/>\ncodicologist, and researched and published on the tools and<br \/>\ntechnologies of communication ca. 500-1500, as well as on historical<br \/>\nperformance practice (musicology) ca. 1100-1600.<br \/>\nSince 2008 he has published over fifty articles on various<br \/>\nastronomical artifacts (with a particular interest in the graphic<br \/>\nrecords of observations and how they were made) in a variety of<br \/>\njournals. He is a contributor to the second edition of Springer\u2019s<br \/>\nBiographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers (2014). In 2012, he was the<br \/>\nrecipient of the RASC\u2019s Simon Newcomb Award, and the RASC\u2019s<br \/>\nPresident\u2019s Award. He is one of the recipients of the American<br \/>\nAstronomical Society&#8217;s Historical Astronomy Division&#8217;s 2017 Donald E.<br \/>\nOsterbrock Book Prize. He was elected to the Canadian Astronomical<br \/>\nSociety\/Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Canadienne d&#8217;Astronomie (CASCA), and the<br \/>\nInternational Astronomical Union named Asteroid 283990<br \/>\nRandallrosenfeld (2004 SG2) in his honour. He has twice placed second<br \/>\nin the Annual Griffith Observer Writing Contest (2008 &amp; 2013). He was<br \/>\nthe 2016 Peter Sim Memorial Lecturer (Calgary Centre RASC).
