Winter Wilderness Survival

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This field trip, hosted by Halifax Region Search & Rescue, will focus on what to do if you get lost in the woods, including trip planning for winter outings and winter survival considerations. We might event do a little shelter building!

Wear winter clothes that are appropriate for the weather conditions and sturdy boots. Bring some extra warm clothes since the activities we will be doing won’t require long episodes of exertion – as everyone knows from experience exercise keeps people warmer. Everyone will need a bottle of water and some snacks. A thermos with a hot drink would be good. A piece of closed cell foam or something else to sit on so that nobody is sitting directly on the cold ground (there will be a few to borrow). Bring a day pack to carry these things so your hands are free while hiking.

The location for the field trip is the woods behind the HRSAR base near Lower Sackville (116 Lakeview Road, Lakeview, NS). The base has a parking lot, and a washroom. The woods will be very wet by Sunday, so make sure to wear warm, completely waterproof boots.

As always, email ynchalifax[at] to register.
